Regularly clean out your washing machine lint trap and dryer filter to prevent blockages and reduce the risk of a fire.

Small habits = big safety!

Quick tip: After every load of laundry, check and clean the lint filter. For washing machines, inspect for lint build-up in areas like the drum or the gasket to keep it running smoothly.

Not all plastics can handle the heat! If it’s not labeled dishwasher-safe, it could melt, warp, or even become a fire hazard. Protect your kitchen (and your dishes) by checking labels or handwashing when in doubt! A little caution goes a long way.

Quick tip: Never put plastic in the dishwasher unless it's labeled dishwasher-safe.

Smoke detectors can save lives, but only if they work!

Test yours once a month and change the batteries twice a year to stay safe.

A good reminder? Swap batteries during Daylight Savings Time!

If your electronic door lock starts beeping, don’t ignore it—it’s warning you that the batteries are running low! Change them as soon as possible to avoid getting locked out unexpectedly.

Just in case, always keep a spare key handy. Nothing ruins your day faster than standing outside your apartment with no way in!

Quick Tip: Set a reminder to check and replace your door lock batteries every few months. A little maintenance now saves a lot of hassle later!

Mold grows fast in warm, damp spaces like your bathroom. Run the exhaust fan during showers and leave it on for at least 30 minutes after to reduce moisture. If you find mold, clean it with bleach to prevent it from spreading.

Fact: Mold exposure can cause allergies, headaches, and breathing problems. Stay safe by keeping your bathroom dry and well-ventilated!

Adulting means knowing what you signed up for! Your lease isn’t just paperwork—it lays out the rules to keep you (and your wallet) out of trouble.

Ignoring policies can lead to fines, extra charges, or even eviction notices—and nobody wants that. Stay informed, read your lease, and follow the rules. It’s all there for a reason!

Quick Tip: If you’re unsure about something in your lease, ask your property manager before it becomes a problem.

Not everything belongs in the microwave! Using the wrong container can cause sparks, fires, or release harmful toxins into your food.

Here’s what to avoid:

  • No Metal – Ever! This includes foil, utensils, and containers with metallic paint or trim. Sparks can lead to serious damage.
  • No Certain Plastics – Not all plastics are microwave-safe. Some can melt, warp, or release toxins when heated. Always check for a microwave-safe label.
  • No Styrofoam – It might seem convenient, but it’s not built for high heat and can break down into harmful chemicals.

Fact: One wrong container can ruin your meal—and your microwave! Play it safe and always check the label.

Doing laundry the wrong way can lead to faded clothes, detergent buildup, and even a broken washer.

Here’s how to keep your laundry routine on point:

  • Don’t Overload the Washer
  • Less is More with Detergent
  • Sort Your Laundry
  • Wash New Bright Clothes Alone
  • Too Much Laundry? – Head to a laundromat

Quick Tip: Keep your washer clean by running an empty cycle with vinegar and baking soda once a month!

Your garbage disposal is a handy kitchen tool, but treating it like a trash can is a recipe for disaster. Certain foods can clog your pipes, dull the blades, or even break the motor.

Quick Fix Tip: If your disposal stops working, check for the reset button—it’s usually underneath (or sometimes on top). A quick press might save you from a costly plumber visit!

Plugging too many devices into one outlet can be a serious fire hazard—especially with high-powered appliances like hair dryers, microwaves, or gaming setups. Overloaded outlets can overheat, trip breakers, or even start an electrical fire.

Quick Tip: Avoid plugging multiple heat-generating devices (like space heaters or curling irons) into the same outlet. If you need more plug space, use a surge protector—not just a power strip—to help prevent electrical damage.

Keeping your outlets in check isn’t just about convenience—it’s about safety! Take a second to look around and make sure you're not overloading your space. Your future self (and your apartment) will thank you!

Accidents happen when you least expect them, and having a well-stocked first aid kit can make all the difference. Whether it’s a minor cut, a burn, or something more serious, knowing how to handle basic first aid can keep a bad situation from getting worse.

What to Keep in Your First Aid Kit:

  • Bandages, gauze, and medical tape
  • Antiseptic wipes and antibiotic ointment
  • Tweezers and scissors
  • Pain relievers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
  • Thermometer and instant cold packs
  • Allergy medication and any personal prescriptions

Quick Tip: Learn the basics of first aid—like how to stop bleeding, treat burns, or perform CPR. You never know when you or someone else might need it!

Emergencies can be scary, but being prepared can make all the difference.

Ever noticed your fridge water tasting a little off? Or maybe the ice cubes are looking cloudy? That’s a sign it’s time to change your refrigerator’s water filter! Changing the filter might sound like a hassle, but it’s actually super easy.

Just follow this simple trick:

  • Step 1: Take a picture of your fridge’s make and model number (usually found inside the door or on the back).
  • Step 2: Ask ChatGPT which filter you need.
  • Step 3: Order it on Amazon (or wherever you shop).
  • Step 4: Swap it out and enjoy fresh, clean water again!

Quick Tip: Most filters should be replaced every 6 months to keep your water and ice fresh. If you notice a bad taste or slower water flow, don’t wait—switch it out!

Stay ahead of the game and keep your fridge running smoothly. Your future self (and taste buds) will thank you!

Nothing ruins a cozy apartment faster than finding uninvited guests—aka bugs and rodents. The best way to keep them out? Stop giving them a reason to move in!

  • Food Left Out = Pest Buffet - Leaving food out overnight (or even for a few hours) is an open invitation for ants, roaches, and even mice. They can smell crumbs and leftovers from a mile away, so always seal up food, store snacks in airtight containers, and wipe down counters after eating.
  • Trash Matters - Take out the trash regularly—especially if it has food scraps. Keep a lid on your garbage can to stop pests from sniffing out a meal. Rinse out recyclables before tossing them. Sticky soda cans and food containers are bug magnets!
  • Close the Entry Points - Even the smallest gaps in doors, windows, or cabinets can let pests inside. If you notice openings, submit a maintenance request to seal them up!
  • Clean = Bug-Free - Don’t let dirty dishes pile up in the sink overnight. Sweep or vacuum crumbs off the floor. Store pet food in a sealed container instead of leaving it out all day.

Already Seeing Bugs?

Try a natural remedy like vinegar spray or peppermint oil for ants.

If the problem gets worse, report it ASAP so professional pest control can step in.

Quick Tip: Prevention is way easier (and cheaper) than dealing with an infestation. A little effort now saves you from a big headache later!

A tiny drip today could mean a flooded kitchen tomorrow. A flickering light might not seem like a big deal—until it stops working completely. When it comes to apartment maintenance, the sooner you report an issue, the easier (and cheaper) it is to fix!

Why Report ASAP?

  • Leaks don’t fix themselves. A dripping faucet can lead to mold, water damage, and higher utility bills.
  • Electrical issues can be dangerous. That buzzing outlet or flickering light might be a sign of a wiring problem.
  • Small problems can get worse. A slow-draining sink today could be a full-blown clog tomorrow.

  • Common Issues You Should Always Report:
Leaky faucets, running toilets, or water stains on walls/ceilings
  • Flickering lights, dead outlets, or exposed wires
    AC/heater not working properly
  • Pest problems (bugs, rodents, etc.)
  • Broken appliances (fridge, stove, dishwasher, etc.)
  • Cracks, holes, or damage to walls, floors, or ceilings
  • Door locks not working properly

How to Make a Maintenance Request:

  • Be specific—Describe the issue in detail (ex: "The kitchen faucet is dripping non-stop").
  • Include pictures if possible—This helps maintenance understand the problem before they arrive.
  • Don’t wait—Even minor problems can cause major headaches down the line.

Quick Tip: The sooner you report it, the faster it gets fixed! If something isn’t working right, let your property management team know before it becomes an expensive mess.

Why spend a fortune on chemical-filled cleaners when you can tackle dirt and grime with everyday household ingredients? Vinegar, baking soda, and lemon aren’t just for cooking—they’re powerful, natural cleaning agents that get the job done safely and affordably!

Why Go DIY?

  • Safe & Non-Toxic – No harsh chemicals, just natural ingredients.
  • Budget-Friendly – Most DIY cleaners cost pennies compared to store-bought brands.
  • Eco-Friendly – Reduce plastic waste and harmful residues in your home.

The Power Trio: Vinegar, Baking Soda & Lemon

  1. Vinegar – Cuts through grease, kills bacteria and neutralizes odors.
  2. Baking Soda – Great for scrubbing, deodorizing, and absorbing moisture.
  3. Lemon – Naturally antibacterial, fights stains, and leaves a fresh scent.

Easy DIY Cleaning Solutions:

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix equal parts vinegar & water in a spray bottle for countertops, sinks, and glass.
  • Sink & Tub Scrub: Sprinkle baking soda, add a little water and scrub. Rinse with vinegar for extra shine!
  • Microwave Refresh: Heat a bowl of water & lemon slices for 3 minutes, then wipe away grime.
  • Deodorize Carpet & Upholstery: Sprinkle baking soda, let sit for 15 minutes, and vacuum up.
  • Remove Hard Water Stains: Soak paper towels in vinegar, wrap around faucets, and let sit for 30 minutes.

Quick Tip: Always test a small area first when using DIY cleaners to ensure they won’t damage surfaces.

Nobody likes a smelly apartment or an overflowing trash can—so don’t let garbage pile up! Knowing your community’s trash schedule and staying on top of disposal helps keep your space fresh, hygienic, and pest-free.

Trash Day Tips to Keep Your Apartment Clean:

  • Know the Schedule – Check with your apartment management for pickup days and bulk trash disposal policies. Set a phone reminder so you don’t forget!
  • Bag It Up – Always use durable trash bags and tie them securely to prevent leaks and odors.
  • Take It Out Regularly – Don’t wait for a mountain of garbage to form—empty small bins often and take kitchen trash out at least every other day (or sooner if it smells).
  • Recycle Right – If your apartment has recycling, separate items like cardboard, plastic, and glass. Double-check what can and can’t go in!
  • Avoid Common Trash Mistakes – No loose food or liquids in the trash. Drains are for liquids, bins are for solids!
  • Prevent Pest Problems – Bugs and rodents love old food. Seal up leftovers and take out the trash promptly to avoid unwanted visitors.
  • Keep Bins Fresh – Wipe down your trash can weekly and sprinkle baking soda at the bottom to absorb odors.

Quick Tip: Got something too big for the dumpster? Check with your leasing office about bulk item pickup or donation options for furniture and large boxes!

A little effort goes a long way in keeping your space fresh and inviting—so stay ahead of trash day and take it out on time!

Cooking accidents happen—even to the best of us! Whether it’s a sizzling pan, a splash of hot oil, or touching a hot surface, burns can be painful and serious. Knowing how to react immediately can prevent further damage and help your skin heal faster.

What to Do If You Burn Yourself While Cooking:

  1. Act Fast – The sooner you treat a burn, the better!
  2. Cool It Down – Run the affected area under cool (not cold!) water for at least 10-15 minutes to soothe the skin and prevent further injury. Avoid ice—it can make the burn worse!
  3. Leave Blisters Alone – Popping them can cause infections. Let them heal naturally.
  4. Apply Aloe or Burn Ointment – If it’s a minor burn, aloe vera or an antibiotic cream can help with pain and healing.
  5. Cover It Up – Use a clean, non-stick bandage to protect the area while it heals.
  6. Know When to Seek Help – If the burn is large, deep, or on the face, hands, or joints, get medical attention ASAP.

Prevent Burns Before They Happen!

  • Always use oven mitts when handling hot dishes.
  • Turn pot handles inward to avoid accidental spills.
  • Be cautious when lifting lids—steam burns are no joke!
  • Keep flammable items like towels and paper away from stovetops.

Quick Tip: Know where your first aid kit is in your apartment! Accidents are unpredictable, so being prepared is key.

Cooking should be fun, not painful! Stay safe and cook with confidence.

If the power suddenly goes out in part of your apartment or certain outlets stop working, you may have tripped a circuit breaker in your fuse box. This usually happens when you overload a circuit by running too many high-wattage devices at once (like a hairdryer and microwave).

Here’s what to do:

  • Locate the fuse box – It’s usually in a closet, hallway, or utility area.  In the Reserve it’s in the loft area.
  • Check for a tripped breaker – A tripped breaker will be in the middle or ‘off’ position.
  • Reset the breaker – Flip it fully to the ‘off’ position first, then switch it back to ‘on.’
  • Reduce the load – If it trips again, unplug some devices on that circuit before resetting.

Quick Tip: If it keeps happening – Report the issue to maintenance or your landlord, as it could be a sign of an electrical problem.

Avoid overloading circuits by spacing out high-wattage appliances and using surge protectors when possible.

Emergencies can happen when you least expect them—would you know what to do in a fire? Having a fire escape plan could save your life! Take a few minutes to prepare so you’re not scrambling in an emergency.

  • Know Your Exits – Check where the nearest doors, stairwells, and emergency exits are. Never use elevators in a fire!
  • Plan Your Route – Figure out two ways to exit your apartment in case one is blocked.
  • Practice Makes Perfect – Walk through your escape plan with roommates or neighbors so everyone knows what to do.
  • Stay Low, Move Fast – Smoke rises, so crawl if necessary to avoid inhaling dangerous fumes.
  • Call 911 – Once you’re out, stay out and call for help. Never go back inside!

Quick Tip: If your door is hot to the touch, don’t open it—use your secondary exit or signal for help from a window.

Be prepared before an emergency happens! Take a few minutes today to check your exits and talk through a plan. It’s a small step that could make a huge difference.

Ordering takeout every night? Relying on instant noodles? Time to level up your kitchen game! Cooking isn’t just about making meals—it’s a life skill that saves money, keeps you healthier, and impresses your friends.

  • Start Simple – No need to be a gourmet chef. Learn 3 easy go-to recipes that you can make without stress. Think pasta dishes, stir-fries, or grilled chicken with veggies.
  • Balance Your Plate – A meal should have protein, carbs, and veggies to keep you full and energized. (Yes, ramen and chips don’t count!)
  • Grocery Shopping 101 – Stick to basic ingredients like rice, eggs, chicken, canned beans, frozen veggies, and spices. These staples go a long way in meal prep.
  • Practice Safe Cooking – Always keep an eye on the stove, use oven mitts, and know where the fire extinguisher is (just in case!).
  • Experiment & Have Fun – Once you nail your first few meals, try new seasonings or swap ingredients to keep things interesting.

Quick Tip: Need inspiration? Look up beginner-friendly recipes online or ask ChatGPT for meal ideas based on what’s in your fridge!

Cooking doesn’t have to be intimidating—start with small steps, and soon you’ll be whipping up meals like a pro. Your wallet (and stomach) will thank you!

Keeping your apartment clean doesn’t just make it look nice—it also helps prevent pests, mold, and weird smells from taking over your space. But not everything needs to be scrubbed daily! Here’s a breakdown of what you should be cleaning weekly vs. monthly to keep your home in top shape.

Weekly Cleaning Tasks (The Basics that keep things fresh!)

  • Kitchen: Wipe down counters, sink, and stovetop. Don’t forget to clean out old food from the fridge!
  • Bathroom: Scrub the sink, toilet, and shower to prevent mold and soap scum buildup.
  • Floors: Sweep and vacuum to get rid of dirt, crumbs, and pet hair.
  • Trash & Recycling: Take it out before it starts to smell!
  • Laundry: Wash clothes, towels, and bedding to keep things fresh.
  • Surfaces & High-Touch Areas: Wipe down tables, doorknobs, and light switches to reduce germs.

Monthly Deep- Cleaning Tasks (The things you wish you did more often!)

  • Dust Everything: Fans, blinds, baseboards, and shelves collect dust fast.
  • Clean Appliances: Run a cleaning cycle on your washing machine, scrub the inside of the microwave, and wipe down your oven and fridge.
  • Check for Mold & Mildew: Look in your bathroom, under sinks, and around windows.
  • Declutter & Organize: Go through your closet, junk drawer, and pantry—donate what you don’t use!
  • Deep Clean Upholstery & Rugs: Vacuum couches and carpets, and spot-clean stains.
  • Wipe Down Walls & Doors: Scuff marks and fingerprints sneak up on you.

Quick Tip: Set a reminder in your phone for deep-cleaning days so you don’t forget! Keeping up with these tasks will make move-out cleaning (and getting that security deposit back) so much easier.
